Wood casings are produced from multiple pieces that are assembled into a single profile. They are available in several species, including Pine, Oak, Poplar, Sapele, and Cherry. All profiles are cut to shape and run through a shaper to achieve the desired form. Profiled circles and ovals are typically shipped in two pieces. MDF is a superior option when a painted finish is desired. Profiles are cut to shape and run through a shaper to create the final profile. Casings are typically produced from a single sheet whenever possible. Molded circles and ovals are shipped in two pieces, while flat ovals and circles are shipped as a single piece made from sheet stock. Straight lengths are also available to provide an exact match to the casing profile. PVC is the most economical material option. Solid pieces are heated and formed to the required radius, while other profiles are shaped using a shaper. Curved options are available in select styles, including 3½″ Windsor and 2½″ Colonial. Molded circles and ovals ship in two pieces, while flat ovals and circles ship as one piece from sheet stock. Straight lengths are also available to match the casing profile, though some curved profiles require a minimum radius.
